Bjørvika is a neighbourhood in the centre of Oslo by the Oslo fjord. A development plan was prepared for the district to turn a previous port area into attractive waterfront areas consisting mainly of services, new office spaces and expensive apartments. Now, most of the plan has been implemented.
The challenge of the area is the unbalanced offering of spaces for people of different income levels to spend time in. The area has a lot of expensive services, such as restaurants and the Oslo Sauna Association’s public saunas that have an entrance fee as expensive as 260 NOK (around 22 euros). These kinds of fees are impossible for example for students.
In this area there are many public outdoor areas with different functions, such as a swimming pier. Most of the time in Norway though, people want to spend their time indoors. There are some free indoor spaces, such as a library, a gallery Kunsthall Oslo and a public bakehouse in an urban garden Losæter.
My project is a touring tent sauna that is open for everyone free of charge. It is adding one more location to the area that can be entered without buying anything, aiming to make it possible to go to sauna for an even wider audience.
